The image of Mary and Jesus, on the right side of the picture above, is one of my favorite renderings of them.  It is from a painting called "Be It Unto Me" by Liz Lemon Swindle.  Mary's response to the angel who filled her in on what God wanted from her is shocking, considering what it portended for her life and circumstances.

Yes, I am a servant of the Lord; let this happen to me according to your word. (NET Bible, Luke 1:38)

You can see why God chose her.
