Doing A Job
George Schultz, former Secretary of State during the Reagan administration has died. He was 100 years old.
I cast my first ever vote for president for Ronald Reagan in 1980. I was old enough to be paying attention to what was going on in the world, and something Schultz said impressed me to such an extent that I still remember it 40+ years later.
He was involved in some kerfuffle where his own views were perceived to be out of sync with Reagan's and some reporter stuck a microphone in his face and asked him if he wasn't afraid of being fired. I've never forgotten his response:
"You can't do this job if you want it too much."
Wise words, and not just about the role of Secretary of State.
