Such a great piece, thank you. Comfort and convenience will be our downfall. I can see how the generation before me might be less 'educated' but possess a practicality which renders my formal qualifications pretty pointless in any real life situation.
Fantastic piece. Whenever I get to reading about proposed "upgrades" to human beings, like brain implants and such, my first thoughts are always to do with what's going to go wrong. The expansion of the rentier economy into even physical goods makes me believe that Pop had it right about self-sufficiency.
This article also brought to mind a little-known idea proposed by John von Neumann on the place of models in science. Roughly summarized, any phenomenon too complex for a human to understand will require a model no less complex. Instead of better understanding one complex thing, we now have two complex things that nobody understands -- and no way to tell the difference between the artifice and the reality. Our caste of The Experts has made themselves obnoxious by capitalizing on ignorance of this effect.
Excellent reflections. Right on for the mornings efforts with my elderly Mother- trying to keep her dignity in tact while navigating the 'technogical theft of her intelligence ' , through the act of Bill paying online.
